April Fool’s Day

April Fool’s Day

Last Saturday was April Fools' Day! Much to the chagrin and paranoia of innocent bystanders, it was probably filled with jokes and pranks by scheming children, and possibly even a few adults. In my experience, at least here at Mt. Carmel, it does not take a special day set aside for tomfoolery for someone to prank me. I seem to be fair game 365 days a year, 357 – if it happens to be a Leap Year. Oh, well, at least I know I am “loved” in some sort of way.

April Fools' Day is observed by many all over the world. In the UK, they only play jokes until noon. If a person plays a joke after that point, everyone else will call him an "April Fool!" In France, Italy and Belgium, people secretly try to stick a paper fish on each other's backs and will shout, "April fish," if accomplished.

Sadly, there is another "day" dedicated to fools. Unlike April 1st, this is not a laughing matter at all, but it is one God speaks addresses. Psalm 14:1 and 53:1 identify this day for us, "The fool has said in his heart, 'There is no God.'" The day a person comes to the conclusion that God does not exist is without a doubt a tragic, and foolish, day.

The existence of God is a hotly debated topic, but if a person is willing to honestly and sincerely examine the evidence on both sides of the coin, he should come to the truth Romans 1:20 reveals, "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse."

While the battle over God's existence continues to heat up and the army of atheists seems to be growing, let us not be discouraged. There is going to come a day when there will no longer be any atheists (Philippians 2:9-11). Until that day, let us continue to try and teach the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) by pointing out the mountain of logical and reasonable evidence in support the almighty Creator!                                                     --Adapted
