God Is Watching

God Is Watching

“The eyes of the LORD are in every place,

beholding the evil and the good”

(Proverbs 15:3)

     One of the attributes of God is His “omniscience.”  That word means that God knows everything.  Nearly every day we are reminded of what we don’t know.  That is why God is so amazing.  There isn’t anything He doesn’t know!

     In this proverb Solomon reminds us that God knows everything there is to know about each one of us.  Everything we think, and every place we go, God knows.  He watches us.  What should we learn from this?

     God watching us can be a bad thing.  In Proverbs 5, Solomon is reminding his son that he needs to be careful where he goes, because God is watching.  He needs to be careful about not only what he does, but the kind of people that he associates with.  If he goes to places he shouldn’t (like the house of the harlot), men may not know this happened.  But God knows.  Solomon had said earlier that God is aware of the “ways of darkness.”  This is also why Solomon will say in 5:22 that the wicked will be captured by their own iniquities.  When men violate God’s laws, God knows they did and they will be held accountable for that.  Sometimes we may thing that we’ve gotten away with something.  We haven’t.  God saw exactly what we did.  We will be judged according to the deeds we’ve done in the body, whether good or evil (2 Corinthians 5:10).

     God watching us can be a good thing.  When we do what is right, we want our God to see it!  Rest assured, He does.  God sees everything.  In Hebrews 5:10, the inspired writer reminds the brethren there that God will not miss anything they’ve done in their service to Him.  If they have suffered persecution in the name of Christ, God knows it.  If they have lost possessions because of their Christianity, God knows it (cf. Hebrews 10:32-34).  Even the “little things” we do for God He sees.  When someone gives a class of cold water in the name of Jesus, He knows it (Matthew 10:42).  Even the widow who gave just a couple of pennies into the Lord’s treasury was seen by God (Luke 21:1-4).  David’s words from Psalm 139:1-3 fit here perfectly:

O LORD, You have searched me and known me.

You know when I sit down and when I rise up;

You understand my thought from afar.

You scrutinize my path and my lying down,

And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.

     If we do what is right, there is great comfort knowing that our God sees.  When we do what is wrong, let us be reminded that God saw that as well, repent, and determine not to do that again.  He loves us, cares for us and wants to forgive us.  When we repent and determine to do right, He knows it.  He was watching us
