What Does the Holy Spirit do for Us?
These are just two of the basic truths about the Holy Spirit. We were told by Christ that He, the Spirit of Truth, or the Comforter would be sent to earth after He, that is, Jesus, ascended into heaven. John 14:26 “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
In this text we also see that the Holy Spirit gave the apostles the inspired word that we now have as the Bible. Therefore, one thing that the Holy Spirit has done for us is give us the words of eternal life. But that is not His total work. We read in Romans 8:26-27 “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”
In this passage we see that the Holy Spirit will help us in our prayer life. If we are overwrought with emotions and call on God for help, but we don’t know what to say, the Holy Spirit will search our hearts and carry our desires before God. In this manner he actually intercedes for us.
