Ephesians 6:2 Honor thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)

According to Adam Clarke, the commentator, he answers what it means to show honor. “This precept therefore prohibits, not only all injurious acts, irreverent and unkind speeches to parents, but enjoins all necessary acts of kindness, filial respect, and obedience.” This is a command that was enjoined on the nation of Israel at Mount Sinai in the 10 Commandments. In Exodus 20:12 the text reads: “Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.” This was repeated by Jesus in Mark 10:19 when He said: “Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honor thy father and mother.”
