"Just A Nobody"

"Just A Nobody"

Cory Waddell

A relatively recent song on the radio has captured my heart and I’d like to share the lyrics with you here. After you read them, I will come back and make a couple of observations.

Why You ever chose me has always been a mystery.

All my life, I've been told I belong at the end of a line with all the other “Not-Quites;” with all the “Never-Get-It-Rights.”

But it turns out they are the ones You were

looking for all this time.

'Cause I'm just a nobody trying to tell everybody all about

Somebody who saved my soul.

Ever since You rescued me, You gave my heart a song to sing.

I'm living for the world to see nobody but Jesus.

Moses had stage fright, and David brought a

rock to a sword fight.

You picked twelve outsiders nobody would've chosen,

and You changed the world.

Well, the moral of the story is everybody's got a purpose.

So, when I hear that devil start talking to me, saying, "Who

do you think you are?" I say,

I'm just a nobody trying to tell everybody all about

Somebody who saved my soul.

Ever since You rescued me, You gave my heart a song to sing.

I'm living for the world to see nobody but Jesus.

So, let me go down, down, down in history as another

blood-bought faithful member of the family.

And if they all forget my name, well, that's fine with me.

I'm living for the world to see nobody but Jesus.

I'm just a nobody trying to tell everybody all about

Somebody who saved my soul.

Ever since You rescued me, You gave my heart a song to sing.

I'm living for the world to see nobody but Jesus.

History classes are filled with gigantic figures who changed the course of humanity, whether for better or worse. In reading about them we construe a picture of greatness and destiny that is only for a select few in this world. Yet, one of the biggest lies we tell ourselves is that we must be someone special in order to make a difference. Such an idea is untrue, for one, because it assumes a faulty notion of “making a difference.” Too many people are convinced a “difference” means affecting the whole world, nation, or community. The difference you make may only affect your family or friends circle, but it could be a lasting difference that goes into multiple generations. Who was the first Christian in your family? Do you even know? And yet, you’re here because of the difference someone made in their life which made a difference in yours.

A second flaw in this lie we tell ourselves is the assumption that God only uses the “great” to do “great” things. Take a look through the Bible and look at how silly of a notion that is. Moses did not begin as MOSES. David did not begin as DAVID. They were nobodies, and God’s power through them is what allowed them to go down in history. Yet God never asks us to be great. He asks us to be present, to be faithful, and to be willing.

Who are you? You may just be a nobody. And that’s great, because it means God can use you to make a difference.
