I Love the Constitution

I Love the Constitution

Petrillo

While driving the other day, I glanced over at a bumper sticker. It read, “I Love The Constitution.” What an interesting statement. Of all the bumper stickers one could choose, why this one? What type of person would love the constitution this much? What does this person love so much about the constitution?

While we definitely live in an incredible country, and our laws are truly great compared to many other places, it's certainly unique to be a person who “loves” our laws. I don’t at all fault the person for having this bumper-sticker either. But it did make me wonder, do we love law (any law) enough to put a bumper sticker on our car?

I know of one person who most certainly would have had a bumper sticker on his car – David. David often communicated his love for God’s laws.

“O how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day”

(Psalm 119:97)

“I hate those who are double-minded, But I love Your law

(Psalm 119:113).

“I hate and despise falsehood, But I love Your law

(Psalm 119:163)

Those who love Your law have great peace,

and nothing causes them to stumble”

(Psalm 119:165)

There is no doubt that one of the wonderful qualities that made David “a man after God’s heart” (1 Samuel 13:14) was the fact that he loved God’s laws. He certainly would have put an “I Love God’s Law” bumper sticker on his car.

The question is, do we share David’s love for God’s word? Would we want to put an “I Love The Bible” bumper sticker on our cars? No, I don’t literally mean that we should go out and find such a bumper sticker. I just mean, do we truly love God’s laws? Do we love to read, study, and hear lessons from the Bible?

Interestingly, our love for God’s word intimately connects with how sincere our love for God is. Consider Jesus words in John 14:23-24, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.”

If we don’t love God’s word, it directly calls our love for God into question. One of the best parts is, we can come to love God’s word. It’s going to require effort. It’s going to require devotion. However, it will result in the greatest change in our lives both here and in eternity.
